Why CIJ ink looks cheap and the plant still feels it is expensive

You know the meeting. Procurement walks in with two quotes. One is a box of thermal inkjet (TIJ) cartridges. The other is a drum of CIJ ink plus a bottle of makeup fluid. The unit prices do not even belong to the same sport. One side says you just swap a box. The other says the ink is nearly free and will mark fast bottles all day. Most small factories are not bad at saving money. They are afraid of picking the wrong consumable and dragging the whole line down with it.

Here is the short version before the detail: a TIJ cartridge and CIJ ink are not “expensive versus cheap.” They are two different ways of feeding a printer. The box fits close-range, sharp, easy-to-run work. The circulating fluid fits high speed, curved parts, and long continuous shifts. What follows is a plant-floor split, not a brochure split.

One Is a Coffee Pod, the Other Is a Plumbing System

The first thing to understand is that a TIJ cartridge seals ink and printhead in a single disposable unit, so a changeout is also a new head. CIJ keeps ink moving, recycles almost every unused drop, and adds makeup to pull viscosity back into its window. If you price them as the same kind of item, the argument goes crooked before it starts.

Picture a sealed coffee pod next to a plumbed espresso machine. The TIJ box is the pod: ink inside, nozzles on the face, toss the whole thing when it is empty, and the counter stays clean. CIJ is the plumbed machine: fluid runs through hoses, some of it evaporates into the air, and you top up a makeup tank to keep the brew consistent. Filters, pump, and a return gutter all need care. The jug of fluid can look cheap on the quote. You still should not compare a jug of fluid with a part that also replaces the printhead’s life.

On the line, industrial TIJ fires a resistor, grows a bubble, and pushes a drop on demand. A typical industrial cartridge is labeled around 42 ml, solvent fast-dry or water-based. Because the box is closed, evaporation is low and startup is close to instant. CIJ throws a continuous stream instead. Most of those drops never become the character. A gutter catches them and sends them home. Solvent meets air, the ink thickens, and the printer doses makeup to hold the viscosity window.

That is why “CIJ consumable” is never one bottle. It is ink, makeup, filters, and cleaning time. The TIJ invoice looks sharp because the box also pays for the head’s service life.

TIJ wins on cleanliness and simple work. CIJ wins on distance, speed, and product that bounces or curves.

Picture a cosmetics-cap line. The face is fairly flat, speed is medium, the message is lot plus QR. A TIJ box prints close to the cap. The swap takes two minutes and a night-shift operator will do it alone. Now switch to high-speed PET bottles. The bottle keeps moving, the head cannot sit tight, and the TIJ code goes pale or incomplete. That is when circulating CIJ ink and a longer throw become the main course.

Three questions filter most of the risk before any purchase order: Is the part flat or curved? Can the head stay inside 5 mm of the surface? Is the day two hours of recoding or sixteen hours straight? Those three answers choose the consumable type for you.

Do not mix the names either. A TIJ 2.5 cartridge is not an office cartridge with a new sticker, and CIJ ink does not pour into a thermal box. Solvent, viscosity, and chip handshake do not swap. Force the crossover and you dirty the machine or mute it. Buy for the platform, not for the words “inkjet ink” on a listing.

One more limit: most industrial solvent fluids in this family are not a food-contact certificate. Marking the outside of a pack is not marking food. If a customer wants direct contact, change the ink class, not the logo on the carton.

The Liter Price Is a Lie About Your Line

The second point is the one that quietly costs plants money: CIJ ink is often cheaper per liter, and a TIJ cartridge looks dearer per box, but the line should compare good characters plus downtime plus labor, not the number printed on the bottle.

Stay with the coffee picture. A liter of milk does not look painful, but you also pay for the machine that froths it, the cleaning, and the idle time. TIJ is pod maintenance: the cost is visible, the motion is simple. CIJ is a machine that keeps idling: ink loops, makeup enters, and fluid evaporates even when nobody is coding.

Two common illusions follow. See a cheap CIJ drum and decide it will always be cheaper. See a TIJ box at several tens of dollars and decide it cannot be used. Both sums drop the line from the spreadsheet.

On TIJ the box is closed, waste is low, and you can drop resolution when the text is simple. Character yield is more predictable. The limit is just as clear: high speed, large characters, no pause, and you change boxes often. When the box dies, the head leaves with it. You do not refill ink only.

On CIJ the loop stretches liters, and on a fast line the cost per character often beats TIJ. Makeup is not optional. An open circuit loses solvent and the printer corrects viscosity. Add filters, a pump, gutter cleaning, and the odd clog. Some plants barely spend on ink. They spend on service calls and stopped hours.

A rough book for a mid-size plant running two lines: cartons recoded 4 hours a day, and bottles marked 16 hours.

  • Cartons, folding boxes, flat pouches: a TIJ cartridge usually wins. It starts now. You do not feed a loop. A weekend stop does not demand a pipe wash.
  • Fast round bottles, cans, cable: a CIJ system usually wins. There is no time for box changes and the throw is too short. Even clean TIJ cannot hold the beat.

The worst buy is low volume plus a CIJ you wash every week, or huge volume with jumping product and a TIJ forced to cope.

Two hidden costs sit off the spreadsheet. First, skill. A new hire learns a TIJ swap in one pass. CIJ asks you to read a viscosity alarm, aim the gutter, and decide whether the nozzle needs a wash. At night, without the old technician, delay grows. Second, storage. CIJ solvent drums want their own space, more odor, more fire-care. TIJ boxes are easier to store, but they still hate heat and sun. Two weeks above 30 degrees in a container will thicken them too.

Have you seen this purchasing habit? Finance clears “another 15 percent off unit price” and will not clear “change the way we feed ink.” The plant keeps a CIJ that never fills a shift. Makeup still goes in. Filters still get changed. That is not saving. That is fixed cost spread over low output.

The method you can run is simple. Lock message, speed, and material. Print a full shift. Record good characters, refills or box changes, cleaning minutes, and scrap. Compare “good characters divided by total money.” Do not fight “price per box” with “price per liter.” If the units do not match, the answer comes out bent.

If the line runs more than 10 hours and the pack mix changes, lot consistency beats the first-delivery discount. A TIJ cartridge that passed on PE can fail on a thinner foil web. A CIJ ink that passed on dry PET can smear if the bottle comes out wet. A one-shift test on the real part is not paperwork. It is the cheapest filter you have.

Winter and summer move the same formula. An April pass is not an August pass. Retest when the season or the film vendor changes. That habit stops the classic fight: purchasing says “same consumable,” quality says “today it will not dry.”

Vendor sheets sometimes quote CIJ service in the low thousands per year and TIJ service near zero. Treat those as direction, not a promise. TIJ still costs cartridges, wipes, and storage discipline. CIJ still costs makeup even on a well-kept machine. Your shift log beats any brochure total cost of ownership.

Choose by Throw, Speed, and Shape

The third point is the only one that should decide the order: TIJ cartridges fit short throw, sharp codes, and shifts that are not extreme. CIJ ink fits high speed, curves, dirt, or a head that cannot sit close. Close the line case first. Talk brand and discount after.

It is like footwear. A marathon and a shop floor do not share one pair. The shoe is not guilty. The road is. The cartridge is not the villain. The drum is not backward. Using them in the wrong place is what gets expensive.

Materials do not ask for the same fluid, and both systems have solvent formulas. Drop the old line that TIJ can only mark paper:

  • Kraft, shippers, coated cartons: water-based TIJ is often enough; CIJ solvent can be wasted money.
  • PE or PP bottles and caps, complex pouches: both can work. Dry time and throw decide.
  • Metallized film and laminates: you need fast dry and rub. A TIJ solvent box and CIJ solvent ink both can; speed breaks the tie.
  • Round bottles, cans, wire: CIJ is steadier because the part jumps and bends.
  • Pharma cartons, traceability QR, small labels: TIJ is steadier because the stroke has to be fine and scannable.

An incoming check you can run without a lab:

  1. Measure throw. Can the head stay between 1 and 5 mm? If not, lean CIJ.
  2. Read the message. Date and lot only: CIJ is enough. Barcode or QR: sample TIJ first.
  3. Read the shift. Less than one shift, frequent stops: the TIJ box makes less trouble. Two shifts with almost no pause: the CIJ loop keeps up better.
  4. Read the room. Dust, oil mist, uneven gaps: CIJ takes more abuse. A clean room and a relief crew that must work alone: TIJ is kinder.
  5. Read the storeroom. Can you park drums and makeup apart? If not, do not walk into CIJ lightly.
  6. Run a shift and scan with the same gun the line uses. Eyes are a weak tool.

When would I not force a swap? A customer who specifies a CIJ brand, an ink already validated on a pharma pack, or hundreds of round bottles a minute. On warehouse recoding, cosmetic caps, and mid-speed pouch dates, a TIJ cartridge is often the more reasonable default. What you save is not a few cents of ink. It is the two hours a week spent washing a head.

Sales likes a bigger sentence: “TIJ now replaces all CIJ.” It replaces a lot of flat packaging. It does not replace physics. Throw, curve, and takt do not yield to a nicer box.

A hybrid works in many plants: CIJ on the primary pack that runs and spins, TIJ on the case, the flat cap, and the warehouse. That is not indecision. That is grading risk the way you already grade resin.

If you buy from a counter with no lot, no sheet that matches the liquid, and no one who can tell solvent from office dye, you are not buying an industrial consumable. You are buying a surprise. Surprises belong in marketing, not on a date coder.

High-speed dusty corrugated is still often a large-character or CIJ job. TIJ wins on simple care and a small install, not on every substrate at every speed. If the head cannot get close, stop arguing about cartridge price. Change the technology first.

The Beverage Plant That Kept CIJ on Bottles and Moved Cases to TIJ

A beverage plant on a typical industrial estate ran two lines. One marked the date on PET bottles. The other marked lot and a flow code on the shipper. To “keep it simple,” both ran CIJ. The consumable order was one pair: ink plus makeup.

The trouble sat on the case line. Speed was low. The text wanted to be large and readable, sometimes with a simple code. The CIJ stayed on, makeup kept dropping, and Monday meant a gutter wash. The supervisor figured that machine spent a good share of its life evaporating in idle. Finance saw cheap ink. Quality saw a weak code. Maintenance feared Monday startup.

They did not rip out both printers. The bottle line stayed on CIJ: round, damp, fast, no way to park the head close. The case line moved to TIJ with a water-based box. For two days the operator still held the cartridge too far and the text landed on the tape edge. They reset the bracket and the photocell. Day three held. Consumable change became a plug-in. A night-shift operator did it alone.

Three months later they opened the invoices. Bottle ink and makeup barely moved: that spend was the right spend. The case line no longer bought makeup or called a wash for that machine. Total consumable cost stepped down. More visible still, Monday no longer had a startup queue. Scan complaints on the shipper went from every few days to occasional.

The lesson is not “move everything to TIJ.” It is to split the consumable by line: speed and curve keep CIJ ink, flat recoding moves to a TIJ cartridge. Treat the two as one item for a price cut, and you will buy wrong.

Most plants do not need a cheaper mystery liter. They need to know whether they are buying a box or feeding a loop. The box and the drum can live together. What should not live together is two supply logics mashed into one muddy total. Line beat, throw distance, and the mark on the customer’s pack are harder facts than the milliliter price on a quote.
